Figures from 1964 onwards are the results of backward estimations and forward projections by the German Bishops Conference (DBK, Deutsche Bischofskonferenz) based on the census of May 27, 1970; from 1987 onwards updates were made based on the census of May 25, 1987. Figures from 1990 onwards are based on information from parishes and dioceses. Figures for earlier years are based on previous information from the source.
From 1990 onwards including former East German federal states.
