In 2020, the total land area of coastal mangroves worldwide amounted to 147,359 square kilometers. Southeast Asia had by far the largest mangrove area of any world region, with an estimated 48,222 square kilometers.
Mangroves provide a variety of ecosystem services, including storing vast amounts of carbon, helping to stabilize shorelines, and preventing erosion.
