As of 2020, the largest area of protected mangroves worldwide was in South America, where some 72 percent of the total mangrove area has been protected. On a global scale, 42 percent of total mangrove areas are protected, which equates to 61,287 square kilometers of protected mangrove area.
Mangroves store vast amounts of carbon and help in stabilizing shorelines and prevent erosion.
