Number of startup M&As in Japan from 2016 to 2021
In 2021, there were around 90 mergers and acquisitions (M&A) with startups in Japan. The number of startup M&As gradually increased in recent years. While IPOs represented the leading exit strategy for Japanese companies receiving venture capital (VC) in past years, M&As accounted for roughly one-third of exits.
