Peat is a byproduct of wetlands. Many countries drain wetlands for agricultural use, but the dried peat soils emit a large amount of carbon dioxide. Across the European Union, the average of all agricultural greenhouse gas emissions from peat soils is 25 percent. Latvia has the highest percentage of greenhouse gas emissions from peat soils, with 71 percent.
