In 2023, approximately 96 percent of Colombia's population was affiliated with the public health care system. In Bogotá, around 76 percent of insured citizens were part of the contributive program, which is mandatory for every person earning at least the minimum wage. In comparison, only eight percent of the affiliated people from Vichada were associated with this health program, while 93 percent had the subsidized scheme.

The General Health Social Security System, known in Colombia as "Sistema General de Seguridad Social en Salud (SGSSS)," looks to assure all Colombians with basic health services. This system is divided into a contributive program mandatory for all individuals earning at least a minimum wage, and a subsidized program for the lower income population, including the indigent population.
