Overall, fully electric vehicles were more energy efficient than their gasoline or diesel counterparts.

The source provides the following supplementary information: "Rankings are based on combined city and highway fuel economy estimates, which assume 55% city driving and 45% highway driving."
As electricity is not measured in gallons, a conversion factor is used for hybrid and electric vehicles to translate the fuel economy into miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent.
