According to the School Children’s Online and Offline Learning (SCHOOL) survey conducted across India in August 2021, 65 percent of the parents of urban school children between the grades 1 and 8 stated that their children's ability to read and write had declined during the online schooling due to the pandemic. Furthermore, 46 percent of the urban school children found it difficult to follow online classes.

The survey was conducted across conducted across Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamilnadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The children were enrolled in classes 1 to 8.
