According to the School Children’s Online and Offline Learning (SCHOOL) survey conducted across India in August 2021, 30 percent of the parents of urban school children between the grades 1 and 8 stated that the reason for irregular studying habits was due to the absence of personal smartphones for the children. On the other hand, 14 percent of parents stated that irregular learning was due to the negligence of the children's school who did not send any online material.

The survey was conducted across conducted across Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamilnadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The children were enrolled in classes 1 to 8.
