According to the School Children’s Online and Offline Learning (SCHOOL) survey conducted across India in August 2021, 77 percent of the urban school children between the grades 1 and 8 lived in a family with a smartphone. However, only 51 percent of the rural school children's family had smartphones.

The survey was conducted across conducted across Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamilnadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The children were enrolled in classes 1 to 8.
