According to the School Children’s Online and Offline Learning (SCHOOL) survey conducted across India in August 2021, 37 percent of the rural school children between the grades 1 and 8 were not studying at all. However, only 19 percent of the urban school children were not studying at all.

The survey was conducted across conducted across Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamilnadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The children were enrolled in classes 1 to 8.
