A June 2021 study investigated the most common reasons for the lack of engagement with women's sports when compared to men's sports in the United States. Overall, 40 percent of survey respondents indicated less media coverage as the reason behind their unequal engagement with women's sports. Only 13 percent of survey participants reported slower games as the reason why they engaged more with men's sports than women's sports.

The survey question was originally phrased as follows: "Which, if any, of the following, do you believe are reasons why people don’t engage with women’s sports as much as men’s sports?"
