In 2020, many countries experienced dramatic emissions reductions due to the outbreak of COVID-19. However, emissions are expected to rebound in 2021 as economies recover from the pandemic. Across the G20, energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are projected to increase 4.1 percent compared to 2020 levels. Emissions in Turkey are projected to rebound 7.2 percent, while China and the United States are expected to see emissions rebound more than five percent. In 2020, CO2 emissions from fuel combustion in the United States plummeted 10.7 percent compared to 2019 levels.

CO2 emissions cover only the emissions from fossil fuels combustion (coal, oil and gas) by sector. They are calculated according to the UNFCCC methodology (in line with the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories).
