Global carbon dioxide emissions from fuel combustion increased 1.7 percent in 2023, compared to 2022. India observed the largest annual emissions increase in 2023, at 7.2 percent. Mexico followed, with emissions in the Central American country rising 5.7 percent from the previous year. Emissions in China - one of the world's biggest emitters - also increased in 2023, by roughly 5.3 percent.

CO₂ emissions cover only the emissions from fossil fuels combustion (coal, oil and gas) by sector. They are calculated according to the UNFCCC methodology (in line with the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories).
