According to a survey conducted in England in 2023, roughly 57 percent of respondents aged between 20 to 25 years were screened positive for eating disorder based on the Eating Disorders Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA) module. It should be noted that classed as 'screened positive' does not indicate that the young person or child has an eating disorder but that they have an increased likelihood. This statistic displays the share of children and young people who screened positive for a possible eating disorder in England in 2023, by age.
Share of children and young people who screened positive for a possible eating disorder in England in 2023, by age
Likelihood for eating disorders garnered from questions on the Eating Disorders Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA) module. For 11 to 16 year olds, parent responses were used, and children were classed as ‘screened positive’ if they scored 2 or more out of 5, otherwise they were classed as ‘screened negative’. For young people aged 17 and over their self-report responses were used with a score of 1 or more classed as ‘screened positive’ otherwise they were classed as ‘screened negative’.
The source adds "Screened positive does not mean that the child or young person had an eating disorder but indicates an increased likelihood of problems with eating."
