The annual number of passengers of the Rio de Janeiro subway system almost remained stable, above the 240 million margin between 2016 and 2019. However, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the ridership of the metro system declined significantly to 118.5 million in 2020. Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil, counting over 6 million inhabitants.
