Among the merger and acquisition (M&A) programs used by the top 2,000 companies worldwide between 2010 and 2019, the programmatic M&A approach proved to be the least risky, with higher excess total returns to shareholders (TRS). On average, the programmatic M&A strategy resulted in 2.1 percent TRS. On the other hand, the organic M&A approach proved to be the most risky strategy during the time period, with negative two percent TRS, on average.
