According to a survey conducted in Japan in early 2024, the share of respondents who stated that they attended traditional art performances in the past year amounted to 2.9 percent. Attendance rates dropped significantly compared to the previous years due to the social distancing measures implemented following the coronavirus (COVID-19). Traditional art performances cover a broad variety of stage performances, from classical music, to puppet shows, to drama.

Traditional art performances include kabuki (classical Japanese drama), noh and kyogen (classical Japanese drama, come as a set), joruri (puppet show), koto (stringed instrument), shamisen (three-stringed Japanese lute), shakuhachi (bamboo flute), gagaku (Japanese court music), shomyo (Japanese Buddhist chant), etc. Figures prior to 2021 come from previous reporting.
