According to the National Sample Survey 71th round (NSSO-71) and 75th round (NSSO-75), the intensity of poverty remained at approximately 40 percent across both rural and urban regions of India over the years. Meanwhile, headcount poverty declined quite rapidly in both rural and urban India. As a result, the multidimensional poverty index (MPI) in rural areas dropped by almost half to 7.4 percent in 2018, whereas urban India's MPI was even lower, standing at just over one percent in the same year.

Supplementary notes
*The National Sample Survey 71st round (NSSO-71) was conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) in India between 2014 and 2015, the National Sample Survey 75th round (NSSO-75) between 2017 and 2018.
According to the source, the multidimensional poverty index (MPI) is the product of two indices: the percentage of people who are poor, or the incidence of poverty (H), and the average share of deprivations (or percentage of possible deprivations) that poor people experience, which is the intensity of poverty (A).
