Number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Somalia 2021, by zone

Somalia counted almost three million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as of January 2021. IDPs are people who are forced to leave their house but remain within their country's borders. The most common reasons for new displacements are conflict, insecurity, and climate related events, such as droughts and floods. In Somalia, most IDPs are in the South Central zone of the country, where over two million IDPs were staying. In 2020, Al-Shabaab intensified its attacks in Somalia, causing thousands of new displacements. Somalia is one of the countries with the highest terrorism threat levels in the world. The militant group of Al-Shabaab, a jihadist fundamentalist group, was responsible for 88 percent of all terror-related deaths in Somalia in 2019.
