Tanzanite sales from Tanzania reached roughly 62 billion Tanzanian shillings (around 27 million U.S. dollars) in the financial year 2019/2020. This was the highest sales value of the rare gemstone since the construction of a wall surrounding tanzanite mines in Mirerani, in the northern Manyara Region, to contain smuggling. The blue and violet gemstone is only found in Tanzania.
