Roughly 4.6 thousand kilograms of tanzanite was produced in Tanzania in the financial year 2019/2020. This was the highest production volume of the blue and violet gemstone, only found in Tanzania. As of 2018, the country built a wall surrounding tanzanite mines in Mirerani, in the northern Manyara Region, to contain smuggling of the rare gemstone. Since then, production output and sales of tanzanite have been increasing.
