The total number of individuals in South Africa vaccinated against coronavirus (COVID-19) amounted to nearly 14.8 million as of November 22, 2021. This included people who received one dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine (single dose regimen) or one dose of the Pfizer vaccine (two doses regimen). In all South African provinces, the number of women immunized was higher than that of men. Gauteng, the province with Johannesburg as capital, had the highest number of vaccinated individuals at 4.23 million. KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape followed with 2.54 million and 2.43 million people that have taken the jabs.
South Africa faced a rough start to its vaccination program as health authorities claimed that the Beta variant (B.1.351 or 501Y.V2) was resistant against the received AstraZeneca/Oxford immunizing. The country then started its phase one campaign on February 17, 2021, inoculating health workers with Johnson and Johnson vaccines.
