On May 17, 2022 some 29 container ships were waiting outside the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, compared to just five container ships waiting at the ports on October 13, 2020. The congestion at the ports peaked on January 9, 2022 when 109 container vessels were waiting outside the ports. This high increase in congestion was due to disruptions to the global supply chain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
