In 2022, the majority of applicants for recognition of refugee status in Brazil were Venezuelans. Approximately 34,000 people from Venezuela applied to be recognized as a refugee in the Portuguese speaking country. The number of Venezuelan citizens who submitted an application to be officially recognized as refugees in Brazil peaked in 2018. The second highest number of refugee status applicants were Cubans, with just under 5,500 applications.
