In a study conducted between 2016 and 2018, five in 10 Africans considered that human activity was the main cause of climate change. On the contrary, 27 percent of the respondents from 33 African countries declared that climate change was a natural process. People from Gabon, Guinea, and Tanzania were more likely to affirm that human activity is the main cause of climate change, while less than 30 percent of the respondents from Niger and Mozambique believed the same.
Opinions on main causes of climate change in Africa between 2016 and 2018
The survey question was phrased by the source as follows: "People have different ideas about what causes climate change. What about you, which of the following do you think is the main cause of climate [change], or haven’t you heard enough to say?"
Respondents who had not heard of climate change are excluded (40 percent).
