Natural gas is the main heating fuel in the European Union and also accounts for a major share of inland energy consumption. In 2022, natural gas made up 31.5 percent of total gross heat generation within the EU, while also accounting for 21.7 percent of overall consumption. The importance of natural gas to energy use in the bloc has become cause for concern after supplies have dwindled following the Russia-Ukraine war.
