Regional shares of ocean plastic waste inputs worldwide 2019
An estimated 81 percent of global ocean plastic waste was emitted from Asia in 2019. The second largest plastic waste emitting region was Africa, which accounted for eight percent of ocean inputs. Huge quantities of plastic waste ends up in the ocean from rivers, especially those with nearby cities. In 2019, more than six percent of ocean plastic pollution was emitted from the Pasig river in the Philippines, which runs through Manila.
