The European Union's (EU) industry and economy depends on international markets to supply many critical raw materials. As of 2020, China supplied 98 percent of the rare earth elements (REE) to the EU, while Turkey supplied 98 percent of the borates, and Democratic Republic of the Congo supplied 68 percent of the EU's cobalt.
