The value of personal remittances paid in Ghana increased by 139.8 million U.S. dollars (+17.2 percent) in 2022 in comparison to the previous year. While the value increased significantly in the first phase of the observed period, the increase slowed down in the last years. A remittance is a non-commercial transfer of money by a nonresident worker, a member of a diaspora community, or a citizen with familial ties abroad, for household income in their home country. Workers’ remittances are a significant part of international capital flows, especially regarding labor-exporting countries.

The source adds the following information: 'Personal remittances comprise personal transfers and compensation of employees. Personal transfers consist of all current transfers in cash or in kind made or received by resident households to or from nonresident households. Personal transfers thus include all current transfers between resident and nonresident individuals. Compensation of employees refers to the income of border, seasonal, and other short-term workers who are employed in an economy where they are not resident and of residents employed by nonresident entities. Data are the sum of two items defined in the sixth edition of the IMF's Balance of Payments Manual: personal transfers and compensation of employees. Data are in current U.S. dollars.'
