As of 2021, the value of personal remittances paid in Africa was lowest in Sao tome and Principe and Sierra Leone. For these countries, the amount added up to 2.4 million and 7.7 million U.S. dollars, respectively. Kenya and Gambia followed with approximately eight million and 18 million U.S. dollars, respectively.

Trends over time are not directly comparable due to changes in measurement. Also, the data often do not include remittances sent by migrants via money transfer operators (i.e. Western Union) or informal transfers (i.e. friends, relatives)."
