In 2021, Angola, Gabon, South Africa, and Botswana registered the lowest values of personal remittances received in Africa in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Received remittances in each of these countries covered less than 0.3 percent of their GDP. The share reached 0.4 percent for Namibia.

The source adds the following information: "All data shown here are the World Bank’s calculations based on data from IMF Balance of Payments Statistics database and data releases from central banks, national statistical agencies, and World Bank country desks. Data on GDP are from IMF World Economic Outlook. Trends over time are not directly comparable due to changes in measurement. Also, data often do not include remittances sent by migrants via money transfer operators (i.e. Western Union) or informal transfers (i.e. friends, relatives)."
