In 2023, approximately 22.8 percent of households in Jakarta lived in rented housing units, showing the highest rate among the other provinces. Jakarta's property prices are known to be the highest across the archipelago, and they are not affordable for most Indonesians. In the same year, about 30 million people lived in the Jakarta metropolitan area, of which 20 million people live in the urban region surrounding the capital city and 10.5 million people live in Jakarta itself.
