A league table of the 120 cryptocurrencies with the highest market cap reveals how diverse each crypto is and potentially how much risk is involved when investing in one. Bitcoin (BTC), for instance, had a so-called "high cap" - a market cap worth more than 10 billion U.S. dollars - indicating this crypto project has a certain track record or, at the very least, is considered a major in the cryptocurrency space. Interestingly, Bitcoin is one of the (very) few coins listed as "store of value", or crypto designed to hold or even increase purchasing power over time. Simply put: Bitcoin somewhat functions like a digital gold but has limited functionality or applications elsewhere. Compare this to, for example, developments on XRP or Ripple - a crypto with roots in B2B payments - or Solana (SOL) - a coin that powers parts of the Decentralized Finance or DeFi world.

The categories listed have been assigned by Statista using various sources. This because the use of, for example, Bitcoin (BTC) is noticeably different than, say, Tether (USDT). Please do note that the distinction between these categories is not always clear cut
Supplementary notes
Low cap, mid cap and high cap are commonly used in the crypto world to quickly sift through coins and whether these are risky or not. They have been added to this statistic to help improve navigation, and indicate the following:
High cap: a market cap of 10 billion U.S. dollars or more;
Mid cap: a market cap between one billion and 10 billion U.S. dollars;
Low cap: a market cap of less than one billion U.S. dollars.
