During a 2020 study conducted in Latin America, about two-thirds (66 percent) of respondents in El Salvador agreed that it would be fine for the President to control the media in case of difficulties. Nayib Bukele is the President of El Salvador since June 2019. In Chile and Costa Rica – since 2018 led by presidents Sebastián Piñera and Carlos Alvarado Quesada, respectively – the share stood below 20 percent. Chile was also the Latin American country with the lowest level of trust in the media as of December 2020.
