In 2022, China added over 26 gigawatts of coal power capacity to its electricity grid. That year saw a notable decline in newly operational coal power plants compared with previous years and follows the government's pledge to reaching carbon neutrality by 2060. Figures peaked in 2006 and 2007, when coal-fired power stations with a combined capacity of over 80 gigawatts were connected to the grid in each year. China is by far the largest coal-fired power generating country worldwide.
