As of April 2024, China accounted for the majority of proposed coal mine projects worldwide with more than 220 proposed new projects, equating to over 60 percent of the world's proposed new coal mine projects at that time. India ranked as a distant second, while Russia was third. There were 364 unique proposals for new coal mines in the world that year.
