The vast majority of the planned coal mines in the world are thermal coal mines, accounting for a capacity of over 77 percent as of April 2024. Thermal coal mines produce coal intended for power plants. By comparison, metallurgical coal mines accounted less than 10 percent of the total capacity of planned coal mines worldwide at that time.
