School participation in Africa improved as of 2019. That year, 17 percent of primary school age children were out of school. In comparison, this share was measured at 35 percent in 2000. among lower secondary school age children, 33 percent were not enrolled in 2019, against 43 percent in 2000. The lowest level of school participation was recorded among young people in upper secondary school age. In this group, 53 percent were out of school in 2019.
