According to a 2023 study, 96 percent of stock exchanges worldwide reference the sustainability reporting framework maintained by the Global Reporting Initiative as a part of their environmental, social and governance (ESG) guidance. This was the most common sustainability framework referenced, but there were another four frameworks referenced by more than 50 percent of exchanges. This indicates there is significant divergence between different stock markets over how to define and measure ESG investments.
