The European Union's most polluting power sector utility is RWE. The German multinational energy company produced 74.6 MtCO₂e in 2022, with the largest share of the utility's emissions coming from lignite. PGE ranked second with emissions of roughly 69 MtCO₂e. The biggest polluter in the EU-27 is the PGE operated Bełchatów Power Station in Poland.
