The volume of passengers transported by railways decreased overall during the observed period and peaked in 2005 at 9.9 billion passenger kilometers. A particularly sharp decrease was observed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, where the volume of railway passenger transportation decreased to 4.9 billion passenger kilometers by 2020.
