After years of consecutive growth, the number of passengers transported by the Spanish high-speed rail service AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) dropped abruptly from almost 22.4 million in 2019 to 7.6 million in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the high-speed rail passenger traffic recovered, reaching almost 12.3 million passengers. Passengers numbers began exceeding pre-pandemic figures in 2022, when nearly 23,600 passengers were recorded.
