As a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, restaurant staff across the United States enforced numerous safety protocols and not all customers complied with these protocols amiably. Between October and May of 2021, a gender-based survey in the U.S. was conducted to determine the share of restaurant workers who experienced or witnessed hostile behavior from customers in response to staff enforcing safety protocols. Roughly 82 percent of women and 75 percent of men stated that they had experienced or witnessed hostile behavior from customers.
