The number of wildfire outbreaks in the Amazon forest amounted to nearly 2,500 in 2020. Most of the fire outbreaks that year were intentional to convert tropical rainforest into commercially used land. In total, about 20,000 square kilometers of Amazon rainforest was destroyed just that year.
