In 2018, California recorded the highest revenue from motor fuel taxes, at over six billion U.S. dollars. It dwarfed all other States, with Pennsylvania coming in second at under 3.9 billion U.S. dollars in earnings. California was the leading state in motor vehicle registrations a year later, in 2019.
