Cogeneration plants contributed 11 percent to total electricity production in the European Union in 2020. As for heat generation, this share was even higher at 20 percent. Cogeneration or Combined Heat and Power (CHP) refers to the production of both electricity and distributable heat within an energy plant. In an effort to increase energy efficiency, the EU has been encouraging greater use of cogeneration.
