Drax power station is the largest gas power plant project in Europe as of 2021, with a gross generating capacity of 3.6 gigawatts, equally split in two combined cycle turbines. The British power plant is sponsored by Drax Group plc, and is expected to start operation in 2023. The second largest gas power plant is likewise located in Northern England, and is expected to have a gross generating capacity of nearly 2.5 gigawatts, with one open cycle gas turbine and three combined cycle turbines.
