As of April 2021, around 85 percent of municipalities in the Hokkaido region in Japan were classified as depopulated areas. Hokkaido was the region with the largest share of municipalities considered depopulated, followed by Chugoku and Shikoku.

Areas are categorized as "depopulated" when they meet certain conditions with regards to population decline, economic situation, etc.

The 23 wards of Tokyo were counted as a municipality.

Regions include the following prefectures:
Hokkaido: Hokkaido
Tohoku: Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, Fukushima, and Niigata
Kanto: Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Yamanashi, and Nagano
Tokai: Gifu, Shizuoka, Aichi, and Mie
Hokuriku: Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui
Kinki: Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara, and Wakayama
Chugoku: Tottori, Shimane, Okayama, Hiroshima, and Yamaguchi
Shikoku: Tokushima, Kagawa, Ehime, and Kochi
Kyushu: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima
Okinawa: Okinawa
