In fiscal year 2024, Nintendo generated around 11.3 billion Japanese yen in net sales through its playing cards and merchandise segment. While the multinational consumer electronics company is best known for its entertainment segment based on video games, it started its business as a manufacturer of hanafuda, a type of Japanese playing cards. Trading card games based on the company's intellectual properties are mainly distributed through licensing agreements or by wholly-owned subsidiaries like in the case of the Pokémon franchise.
With the opening of the Nintendo TOKYO store in November 2022 and the inclusion of merchandise sales, segment sales doubled in fiscal year 2024.
